Reading Comprehension & Creative Writing

To master Reading Comprehension skills, we firmly believe that there is never any substitute for reading, if you wish to do well in Reading Comprehension. Read as much as possible, including a few passages on a computer screen, so that you are used to this medium.

In addition, the candidate should remember that the passages which appear in 11 Plus exams are from a wide variety of topics-such as science and technology, economics and business issues, politics and current affairs, biographical sketches, psychology, art and architecture, social issues etc. Hence, it may not be enough to just read-there must also be a variety in what you read. So a student interested in history may need to read passages pertaining to science and technology while preparing for his exams and vice-versa!

Keeping this at the core of our course structure for reading comprehension, we make a student read 8 classic books in our class and assess them on 32 comprehensions exercises prepared by us on few chapters.

Similarly, your Vocabulary should be of a good standard. Not knowing the meaning of certain words, may cause the candidate to struggle in understanding what the author wishes to say.

Our course has integrated a digital vocabulary based on these 8 classic books and more than 1500 words from these books to practice up on with regular assessments.

We suggest that during your preparation stage, while you read, train yourself to stop periodically and ask yourself as to what the author wants to indicate by the usage of particular phrases, is there an implicit meaning in his words, what is the impression he is trying to convey etc. This will help you get better and better at ‘comprehending’ passages and understanding exactly what the author wants to convey.

Another skill that you should develop is the ability to understand the author’s tone or style. Check whether the author is merely stating facts or giving views or advice, taking sides or being biased etc.

Our course structure emphasises on understanding Author’s purpose, third person’s perspective and many more things which will help a student to comprehend easily.

The course is structured with 20 sessions with more than 50 comprehensions, 8 classic books and more than 1500 words vocabulary.

Creative Writing course by Champs Learning is 20 sessions course which unfolds the details of most of the creative writing formats. It explains the thoughts, formats and plan behind each type of creative writing and makes you understand what is expected out of them.

The course address two types of questions

1. The `Don’ts` of Creative Writing

1. Are you reading other writing?
2. Are you plagiarizing your writing?
3. Are you using big words and complicated flowery prose?
4. Are you copying someone else’s writing voice?
5. Are you using too many adjectives and adverbs?

2. The `Do’s` of Creative Writing

1. Structure your thoughts.
2. Write as much as you can.
3. Try to make your openings as compelling and grabbing as possible.
4. Hunt for new writing methods, processes and advice.

We will be examining this thriving genre: what it is; who it’s aimed at; who it’s read by; how it works and how it’s written. The course is particularly aimed at those appearing for 11 Plus exams and will be facing the task of creative writing as a part of their examination.

The course also emphasises from the examiner’s point of view who will focus on

1. Spelling
2. Punctuation
3. Grammar do your verbs and subjects co-ordinate.
4. Consistent use of the same tense
5. Good vocabulary
6. Paragraphs

Among other things, we will be looking at themes, writing techniques and boundaries of young students. The course covers various concepts and assignments and teacher contributes her thoughts on your writing style.
