Slough Consortium – New changes in 11 Plus exam and process

Till last year Slough Consortium used to conduct an entrance exam of CEM for 6 schools of their group which were Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St. Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School, Upton Grammar School, Kendrick School and Reading School.

This year onwards, as CEM Cambridge board has stopped paper Pencil Test and switched to computer-based assessment. As an effect of that Slough Consortium has shifted to GL assessment and  announced few changes.

1. The consortium doesn’t include Kendrick School and Reading School. It has only four schools for 11 Plus exam purpose. Herschel Grammar School, Langley Grammar School, St. Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School, Upton Grammar School.
2. They have a contract with GL assessment for the 11 Plus entrance examination.
3. The tests will select top 35% of the students as eligibility for entry and the eligible cut off marks will be 111.

Exam Structure

The structure and format of the examinations from September 2023 are similar to those used under the previous provider. Pupils will sit two test papers, with questions covering a combination of verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics. All marking and standardisation will be carried out by the test provider.

• The exam from this year will have two papers, They will be conducted on the same day.
• Each paper will be of 60-65 minutes.
• These two papers will test your ability in three areas – Numerical Reasoning (maths), Non-Verbal Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning (which also have English)
• It will be a multiple-choice exam format and answers to be marked on a separate OMR sheet.

Areas of Tests

1. Math
This section of exam will test your ability on Year 5 and Year 6 Math topics. These will be from basic arithmetic functions such as addition/subtraction to some foundation level algebra topics. This will also include questions on fractions, percentage, graph, data-based questions, geometry, shapes. The objective is to test your problem-solving ability.

2. Non-verbal Reasoning
This section will test your ability on spatial awareness, visual interpretation, relationship between figures and codes, sequences of the shapes and logic-based deduction. It may also have some questions on rotation, symmetry and reflection of the shapes.

3. Verbal (also include English)
This section will test your ability of literacy level including your comprehension skills, spellings, grammar understanding. This section will also have questions on word relations, sequencing of letters and word formation.

As Verbal section will be comprising of English also, it might contribute to almost fifty percent of the paper and remaining fifty percent will be among Numeracy and Non-Verbal.

Till last year there used to be approximately 90 questions in each paper with 45-50 minutes time duration of the paper. This used to be a good challenge on time management while maintaining accuracy to solve question in given time. It seems this will remain similar from now onwards too.
